icarus

flying too close to the sun
none of life's big battles has he won
without her, surely he's no one
no one, nothing, a workman's son
his story never even begun

feathers and wax, wings slipshod
hyperion's son gives him a nod
his chance to be a god
or is he just a fraud
treading where mortals dare not trod

flying too close to the sun
none of life's big battles has he won
without her, surely he's no one
no one, nothing, a workman's son
his story never even begun

climbing jacob's ladder
crying, dying, madder
oh he should have had her
but what, oh what does it matter
as his wings they break and shatter

flying too close to the sun
none of life's big battles has he won
without her, surely he's no one
no one, nothing, a workman's son
his story never even begun

his ascension to heaven stalls
to the earth below he falls
with last breath, to her, he calls
wishing still he's in her thralls
protected within her walls

flying too close to the sun
none of life's big battles has he won
without her, surely he's no one
no one, nothing, a workman's son
his story never even begun
